Have you ever run into a kid named Mat Wallace?

I think the two of you might be able to look out for each other, a bit.

Could I tempt you over to the Tower sometime? There's someone I think you'd get on well with.

Hey, kid. You doing any better?

I don't know the protocol for this, if there is any, so I'll go directly to the point: I want to query you regarding the existence of an anomalous Fact in this temporal neighborhood. And because this discussion and any proceeding action could prove potentially hazardous to the Doctor and his allies iff they were to become aware of it, I would ask that they not be allowed access to the interchange.

Is this acceptable?

I'm sure Suzie reported to you that I was working at a junk shop, some time before the trial. I left there under short notice, and I gave the owner the impression that I just disappeared, I think. I'd like to go back and apologize for that. But there are a few other reasons I'm asking.

A lot of non-native artifacts and technology found their way into her shop - she has a good eye for that sort of thing, and she has people bringing her stuff from all over the city. Most of it wasn't dangerous, but some of it was, and a lot of it was useful for one thing or another although she couldn't identify it. She's not a supernatural human, she's got no access to the journal networks, I'm not sure she's more than peripherally aware of wanderers and the Rift. There's not a lot of revenue to be made at a junk shop in the best of times, and I don't think she'd mind if she had someone to route a lot of her more inexplicable stock to a reliable buyer. And I'm sure there are people here who have been missing some of those resources.

Also, I

I used to help her in the garage when I wasn't trolling the city for Rift deposits. Breaking down engines, cobbling together things from bits of other broken versions. It's not

If I could

I don't have anything to do with my hands.

In the unlikely and hypothetical situation that I found myself caretaking the emotional stability of a young woman trained as an assassin and working for an organization which at one point wanted me dead, is there any possibility I could get out of the Tower for a while to meet with her assuming I had a guardian angel escort?

I just figured I'd ask.

[Locked to Mac]

I'm sure you remember the young woman we ran into during the plague of darkness?

I... will say that I still have only vague ideas of what sort of organization she works for, but her history is somewhat peculiar. She was a genetically-engineered programma agent raised as a nonentity, programmed not to perceive herself as a person, and she's just beginning to try to claim a bit of humanity for herself. Which seems to be off to a rocky start, especially as it sounds like a lot of her friends died during the plagues.

...she seems to want to see me.

I don't suppose you'd have any idea what local custody law is on that?

What are your opinions on insane asylums?

{{...about 40 minutes later...}}

That might need elaboration.

So, assume we make a big deal about free will and self-determinism. And assume someone's self-determinism works directly against their own best interests and, as far as we can tell, the best interests of any reasonable goal. (That calls in to question our standards for reasonable, but that's almost my point.) At some point, some functional societies decide that they're perfectly justified in plucking these people off the streets and isolating them. Ignoring for the moment the truly staggering array of systemic abuses in ...well over half of all mental-health policy implementors I know of, actually, and dealing purely in abstracts, is that good? Is it a necessary evil? Or is it just an evil?

So far as I know, no one's arguing against removing people who are a danger to others from the company of others. They've violated the social contract, society has a right to defend itself, and if it doesn't, it has no less right as the aggressor to take aggressive action, so on so forth, but when it comes to the "oneself" part of "danger to oneself or others," is it logical to give more weight to a society's preference (in principle if not specifics) for this hypothetical person to exist than to this hypothetical person's indifference or preference not to?

And when it's a matter of emotional hardship on the people around the subject in question, at what point does "prurient interest because someone's feelings are getting hurt" cross into "society defending itself" again?

There's certainly an argument to be made for people incapable of functioning in society, but why does society get to decide to evict them rather than letting them fail to function on their own free will? And when it comes to treatment and rehabilitation, to what extent is society right in rewriting the processing capabilities of someone's brain? And is there any moral difference between setting it as terms of release (which may or may not be fulfilled, according to a subject's free will) and involuntary treatment?

Does anyone have any business dictating how someone else goes through life, at all?

I have an angel in my room – Mat Wallace, don't know if you know him, but as you seem to know all of my but his brother recently died, and so far as I can tell, he's been in shock and on his own since. I'm trying to get him cleaned up and taken care of, but I don't really want to leave him alone to run after things. Is there any chance you could come up with a tray of food for him? Something easy to get/keep down – juice, bread, fruit, soup, whatever we have on hand.

[Locked to Adrian]

Every one of the Biblical plagues was invoked and recalled by a specific act of will. Every one of them had a purpose. But so far as I know, Chicago doesn't have a Pharaoh, and no one is an agent of calling these down and banishing them. They're tied to a clock – the ultimate in mindless inevitability. I can't divine any sense of intent or will behind them.

Which doesn't make me terribly hopeful about any attempts to circumvent that tenth plague. If there's no will, there's no angel of death to interpret the symbol of blood and pass over.

You're a firstborn, aren't you? The sorts of children who run off on their own to fight in wars often are.

I imagine you're probably busy, but the Tower is still open, if you wanted to stop by needed anything.

I'm sorry you're stuck here.

[Locked to Luke]

...you wouldn't happen to be a firstborn, would you?

[Locked to Huck]

I'm sure you saw it on the journals, but someone's trying to make a safe place for the first-born children for the plague that's supposed to kill them all. Can you get the pack there? ...failing that, can you get them here? It's not Torchwood's style to go rely on someone else's protection, and I imagine that someone or other will have a plan to protect the building up their sleeve.

There's going to be a behemoth looking for me.

eelseason: (Torturer's edge…)

Someone from Luke's organization got to him under the pretense of being able to help get him away. Apparently he asked how Luke had managed to stay under the radar this long, saying it would be useful information to capitalize on to keep him safe wherever he was going, and Luke told them what he knew. He admitted it to me; apparently the meeting was disrupted long enough for him to get away, but he's still a little convinced that you'll turn him out on the street as soon as you find out about this.
